Assassin’s Creed Syndicate: It’s a New Age With a Lot of New Stuff
Ubisoft’s big reveal went live this morning and it was certainly a big one.
Opening with a brief history of the franchise from some of the developers, we were given a very frank and open look at how Unity’s criticism was received within the company.
Ubisoft is using that criticism and looking to the future now, feeling that they have answered the fan’s outcry for something new and fresh.
Enter Assassin’s Creed Syndicate. Set during the Industrial Revolution in London, the story will follow Jacob Frye and his sister Evie as they battle the oppressive Templars holding down the lesser class.
You will join them as they fight for control of various street gangs, building an army to take on their rich and powerful Templar counterparts.
Speaking of fighting, as mentioned in the video, this isn’t the medieval times anymore and carrying a sword at your hip will get you arrested. So, Ubisoft has put more of a focus on hand to hand combat involving brass knuckles and smaller knives, as well as your hidden blade of course.
This has forced the team to overhaul the combat, making it feel more fluid and free-flowing. You will be able to seamlessly switch from fists, to gun, to blade, and back again to deliver punishing blows to your opponents.
Since transportation has advanced a bit more in Victorian London, the player will now have access to carriages. These can be driven, hidden in, and used to run over targets or enemies.
The video showed off an impressive carriage chase through town. Jacob’s carriage taking damage as it is rammed by enemies, while he tries to keep control, tons of carnage is left in his wake. It was reminiscent of Grand Theft Auto, only on a horse and carriage instead of a convertible.
Stealth and Parkour sections of the game have been given a few new tricks as well. Jacob now has a grappling hook attached to his hidden blade gauntlet, allowing him to climb the tallest buildings in seconds.
This also allows him to zipline from building to building or get the drop on an unsuspecting enemy below him. It remains to be seen if he’ll be able to use it in combat but it would be a nice addition if he could.
Jacob also has access to new hallucinogenic darts. When fired directly at an enemy they will make him turn on his friends but when fired into a bonfire, as shown in the reveal video, the darts will create a cloud of hallucinogenic smoke that will effect multiple enemies.
No word on what the story of the modern day sections will include but no one really plays the Assassin’s Creed games for those parts anymore, do they?
What we do know is that Assassin’s Creed Syndicate will be available on October 23rd for Xbox One and PS4 with a “Spring 2015” release window for PC.
More news is said to be coming in the weeks ahead and we will be sure to keep you up to date on anything new that comes down the pike.
