Warner Bros. exhibited the first look of Johnny Depp as the infamous Whitey Bulger in Black Mass at CinemaCon this Tuesday.
Director Scott Cooper says of Bulger that he can be amicable and cruel at the same time, and when he attacks it is more like a cobra.
“He could be charming. He could be ruthless. He was like a cobra—you never knew where he could strike.”
Whitey Bulger was imprisoned in November 2013 for two life sentences; he was an intimidating person who was the sole mafia King of South Boston. Black Mass revolves around the story of Bulger, based on true incidents. The Senator’s brother who was a violent criminal became an informant for FBI later to throw a mafia family that was plaguing his territory.
Depp is known for doing several colorful characters and adding Black Mass to his list of ‘least expected movies from Johnny Depp’ he has yet again proven versatility. The newly released image looks promising in which he looks sharp, with no funny expression or weird clothes.
“A lot of people on set knew Whitey intimately. They got chills at [Depp’s] resemblance. Some of them couldn’t even look at him. It’s easy to be the mustache twirling villain but this performance couldn’t be further from that. He is truly gifted.”
Cooper said that at first people were confused if Depp would be able to pull the look off, but when he got into the character a lot of people who knew Whitey could not even look at him because of the uncanny resemblance.
The movie stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Peter Sarsgaard, Jesse Plemons, Adam Scott, Kevin Bacon, Corey Stoll, Juno Temple, Joel Edgerton and Dakota Johnson.
Black Mass will release on 18 September.
