While it might or might not stand true today, we have heard of leaked emails that suggest Sony has been interested in buying the rights to one Nintendo franchise that many of us recognize the company with i.e. Super Smash Bros.
The emails were leaked a while back but details included in some of them have surfaced now. According to the report in question, Sony Pictures wanted to acquire the franchise as well as some other properties of the Japan based company.
Since Sony Pictures makes movies, we can be sure that the intention behind this was production of films based on the properties.
Imagine what it would have been like!
That being said, the emails in question are directed to former co-chairperson for Sony Pictures, Amy Pascal back in 2014 (she resigned after the leak had occurred). In one from February 2014 they are talking about a “full court press” with relation to Super Smash Bros franchise and their plans for it.
Producer Avi Arad is also mentioned in one of the emails where it is stated that he is “planning to meet with his Nintendo guy (who he has been courting for a couple of years) when he goes to Japan.”
Mario, Zelda, and Donkey Kong are mentioned in another email between Arad and Pascal where they are discussing a “five year chase” in terms of trying to lock down a deal for the rights to these characters for being used in film.
They also talk about “a little plumber” and Pokemon.
Well, Pascal is no more the chairperson for Sony Pictures, but that doesn’t mean the company has lost all interest in buying right to these properties. Don’t you think?
