O.C. Star Mischa Barton Sues Mother Over Exploitation, Fraud
Mischa Barton the former O.C. star has sued her mother for stealing her money, throwing her out of a multi-million house in Beverly Hills and purposely exploiting her career.
Barton filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles on Tuesday accusing her mother Nuala Barton for kicking her out of her home, which was purchased from her money in 2006. The house at that time was purchased for a $7.8 million.
The O.C. star was 17 when she first appeared on the show. Since then she has done some small roles but nothing notable, few of her works include ‘Notting Hill’ and ‘The Sixth Sense’.
According to the lawsuit, Nuala allegedly bullied Mischa Barton, served as her manager for most of her career but is no longer associated with her.
While Barton was busy perfecting her craft and turning her acting dreams into reality, her mother, defendant Nuala Barton, was secretly scheming to exploit Barton’s bourgeoning career for her benefit
The lawsuit also claims that Nuala lied about the money Mischa earned in her 2013 movie and she is withholding information regarding royalties. The suit does not contain information about the exact amount stolen from Mischa but she is claiming that her mother has denied providing account details.
Alex Weingarten, the attorney of Mischa Barton wrote in the suit that her name was used against her will and knowledge. She was not paid properly, although she repped several designers based in New York and Paris; and he added:
Nuala did not compensate Barton for the use of her name, image and likeness, nor did she share in any of the profits from these ventures with Barton. This is all despite the fact that the businesses were built solely on Barton’s fame and popularity.
