CD Projekt Red has finally decided on a “Dark Difficulty” mode for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and it will feature a permanent death.
In an interview with VG247, developer and quest designer Phillip Weber explained how they went about with the new difficulty mode for the game. They didn’t want something that would be completely different when put alongside the other difficulty modes. The Dark Difficulty setting will still be easy for players to pick up but extremely hard to master.
There will be no mercy attached with the game. “If you die five minutes before the ending, it’s over.”
“Dark difficulty is something that many people in the company are very passionate about. Because they want a real challenge.” he assured. It’s not verified whether players will have to unlock the mode by first completing the game on the other difficulty settings. Most games go along with that pattern.
Even if The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt grants you access to the Dark Difficulty setting from the start, it wouldn’t be sane to go along with it. I reckon even veterans of the series will first have to get a hang of the new world by playing the first run on the other mode.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt releases this May for the PS4, Xbox One and PC. For a game that features over a hundred hours of content, starting all over again at any point doesn’t really sound nice.
