Underworld Ascendant, a spiritual successor to the classic PC role-playing series Ultima Underworld, can happen if its Kickstarter campaign manages to raise $600,000.
The project is being handled by Boston-based studio Otherside Entertainment which is headed by Paul Neurath, co-founder of the original Underworld studio Looking Glass. With Neurath on the reins, fans of the classic series should be assured of yet another quality experience.
“The Underworlds were arguably the first immersive first-person games,” said Neurath. “Not only were they the first to create a real-time 3D texture-mapped world, they also pioneered player-driven sandbox gameplay,” he added. “They influenced a whole generation of games: Doom, Thief, Deus Ex, Skyrim, BioShock, and more. Today, leading game designers view the Underworlds as still astonishingly modern in design.”
He further added that this is the first time that things are looking good for him in terms of a revival of the series. Provided that the funding goal is met, Underworld Ascendant will “retain the distinctive fantasy RPG gameplay of the originals” and “push forward with new innovations.”
Neurath finally added that there’s a PC prototype at hand but the final product cannot happen without the help of fans. “We aren’t shy about our ambitions to make a great game, but that takes serious resources and effort.”
