The Dead or Alive series has taken costume design a leap forward. The latest game, Dead or Alive 5 Last Round includes more than 400 costumes on the game, while more outfits are said to be ready for download.
Team Ninja, the developers of the game, challenged their enthusiastic fan base by holding a design competition for the characters. Many fans sent in designs, 31 of which were chosen, created and added to DOA 5. Several have been revealed, with a comparison being made to the original fan design.
Designs include Punk Rock Elliot, White and Blue Hyate, Military Fighter Mila, Sci-fi Assassin Christie, Space Ranger Sarah and Cowgirl Tina.
These designs were not all decided upon from the artistic merit of fans, but by their creative spirit. The competition is a great feat for the engagement of the gaming community. While some developers hold competitions similar to this, it is still surprising that other companies do not allow for such fan based contribution, especially when the modding community is growing greatly.
The developers have had a number of problems with the game, including pushing its release date back a month from February 17th to March 30th. The release date is still set for February 17th for PlayStation 3 and 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One however.
The online multiplayer will also not be ready at the time of launch, the developers have claimed. The online features will be added in a future patch up to 3 months after the game’s release date.
As a result of these issues, Team Ninja has announced that the Halloween 2013 set of 28 costumes will be made available free of charge to customers on Steam. That means that the potential costumes available is over approximately 450.
