Since the announcement of GTA V, the game was expected to be among the greats and do well both in terms of sales and an overall GTA experience. Released back in 2013 on PS3 and Xbox 360, GTA V became the fastest selling video game in the first 24 hours and in no time gave Rockstar and Take-Two, $1 billion in revenue.
In August 2014, it was revealed that GTA V has sold 34 million units around the world but that was before the release of the game on PS4 and Xbox One. Now, according to some new sales figures, GTA V has gone past 40 million sales.
The sales number came from VGchartz, who further shared some interesting details. We know about the dominance of PS4 in terms of hardware sales (18 million and counting) and obviously it was going to have an influence on software sales as well. GTA V moved 4.73 copies on PS4, while on Xbox One, the critically acclaimed title sold only 1.81 million as of week ending December 20.
On last-gen consoles, Sony again leads from the front as PlayStation 3 version of GTA V sells 19.24 million and Xbox 360 sales are at 17.79 million.
Lastly, if we look at overall sales in US and Europe, Rockstar’s masterpiece sold 16.97 million and 15.68 million respectively. Sales figures will rise even further, when the game comes out on PC later this month. The next time we get a sales number, it might be above 50 million.
GTA V sales are just beyond impressive. I believe the credit of GTA V’s success also goes to GTA Online, which is an incredibly fun experience.
Players come together to bring havoc to Los Santos and compete in various activities such as races, team death matches, jobs and more. Rockstar is also planning to introduce online heists, which are expected in a few weeks or so. For more on GTA V, keep it locked to SegmentNext.
