The Xbox Live was down on Christmas which left fans unable to experience the multiplayer portion of their favorite games. However, Microsoft managed to fix the network soon after an alleged DDoS attack by the Lizard Squad.
Things seemed to be back on track and players were able to use online features without an issue, but Xbox Live is not out of the woods yet. According to numerous fans on social media, Xbox Live is down again and they are unable to sign-in to play to online games and use other network related features. At the time of this writing, the outage is affecting both Xbox One and Xbox 360.
According to the Xbox Live Status Page, Social and Gaming services are limited on both systems. Microsoft will obviously be looking into this issue but at the moment, it is not clear that how long it will take before things are back to normal.
The Lizard Squad allegedly took down PSN and Xbox Live a couple of weeks ago and these seems to be the aftershocks of that DDoS attack.
Both Sony and Microsoft should take steps to ensure the security of their networks because even if the FBI takes down the Lizard Squad, there will always be someone else. Players should understand that it’s difficult for a company to completely avoid a DDoS attack.
Still, as difficult as it may be to create an infrastructure immune to these attacks, we are paying $50 to $60 a year, aren’t we entitled to a better online service?
