Telltale Games will be giving the ‘treatment’ to Microsoft’s iconic block-building game in the form of Minecraft: Story Mode.
The developer behind The Walking Dead and the just released Tales from the Borderlands and Game of Thrones episodic seasons will be crafting a story-spinoff, the details of which are currently unknown.
Minecraft: Story Mode is slated for a release “some time” in 2015 for a variety of platforms. Looking at Telltale’s history, you can expect the game to arrive on all the major platforms, including mobile and tablet devices.
Minecraft has always been about freedom of play and exploration and until now has been left without a story or lore. In a given statement by Mojang, the developer said that “We’re not laying down official lore or anything like that. You can still interpret and play in the world of Minecraft however you want!”
The Swedish game developer was acquired by Microsoft in September for $2.5 billion, but it seems that the contract still gives Mojang the freedom to pursue other licenses and releasing games on platforms not owned by Microsoft.
Minecraft is reported to currently boast over 55 million users.
