Publisher 2K Games has opened up a new development studio in the San Francisco Bay Area, where the concentration of these houses is pretty thick already. The new studio is called Hangar 13 and features some veterans from the 2K stable, as well as members from other regions.
Hangar 13 will be led by Haden Blackman, whose work started as a writer for LucasArts. There, Blackman has contributed to Star Wars titles for a decade, which includes an award for writing on The Force Unleashed.
Blackman is also involved in comic writing. Credits include both primary stables, DC Comics and Marvel, where the writer has penned for Batwoman and Elektra respectively.
Other members on board with the new studio include Ubisoft staff, as well as Pixar employees. Hangar 13 works with the motto that every player story is unique.
There isn’t a game name immediately tied to the studio, but Blackman offers an idea to what’s happening in the Bay Area studio:
Our ambition is to create next-generation games that allow players to shape their own experiences, from the moment-to-moment gameplay, to the long-term impact on the world, characters and narrative. To realize this goal, we’re building proprietary technology and assembling a core team passionate about delivering mature experiences loaded with meaningful choices.
We do manage to catch a glimpse of the scope of the team’s project. On the studio’s website, we find the following description for the secret project:
We’re currently creating an intense action game set in an immersive world and with a strong narrative, but player agency is at the heart of everything we do. We want to give players the freedom to choose how to overcome challenges and make meaningful decisions that shape the world and characters around them.
Is anyone else getting a Dishonored vibe from this? Maybe we just really like Dishonored and want to see more of it.
