Today marks the first anniversary of the PlayStation 4 and what a ride it has been for Sony.
Posting on the official PlayStation blog, Sony thanked its user-base and expressed humility in front of their passion for the new console. The company also released an infographic that states Sony has shipped 13.5 million units worldwide, with players having invested 1 billion hours playing online. In the United States, the console managed to generate the most revenue during its first year than any other new gaming platform.
There are currently more than 56 million unique active users, and 7.9 million PlayStation Plus subscribers. The latter is a 270 percent increase in membership since the console’s release last year. However, that’s to be expected since the PlayStation 4 made it mandatory to be PlayStation Plus member in order to play online.
The figure of 13.5 million units shipped worldwide is from the company’s last financial report that covered sales until September. Earlier this week Sony revealed that the PlayStation 4 was also the most sold console in the United States for the tenth month straight.
The PlayStation Experience takes place later this year from December 6-7 in Las Vegas. The two-day event will feature access to many PlayStation 4 titles that are scheduled for release in 2015. Attendees will get an opportunity for some hands-on action with new content, take part in developer interviews, panels and more.
December 3 also marks the 20th anniversary of the original PlayStation console.
