Riot Games stated that they would keep optimizing the map, and they are happy with where they are right now. Open beta is expected to kick off soon, but the exact date is yet to be announced.
According to a post on the League of Legends website, here is how Riot will handle the visual overhaul:
Once the 2014 season is officially wrapped, we’re going to use a staggered rollout during preseason, pushing the updated map onto live in stages to help ensure server stability. Here’s the order for our planned rollout:
Stage 1: Team Builder and all bot games
Stage 2: All normal modes and custom games
Stage 3: Ranked
During the beta, Riot Games will keep rolling out patches to make changes and improvements to Summoner’s Rift. And eventually, the old one will be completely replaced by the new updated version of the map.
