Developer Sukeban Games has a prelude build for an upcoming project, called VA-11 HALL-A: Prologue. It’s out for PC on indie platform itch.io in a pay-what-you-want, as is customary on the side.
The game, also named VA-11 HALL-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action, takes place in a cybernetic future, where technology rules all. You play Gillian, a bartender at Valhalla, who mixes drinks for the incoming customers.
Given this is a simulator, there are few interactions in the game that are as important as the conversational centerpieces, but some action is involved. Mostly, you’ll be in charge of pouring the correct mixture of drinks for your patrons.
Combinations are listed from a selection of liquids on the side of the screen. There are some side factors to take into account as well, such as whether or not your clients prefer ice in their refreshing beverage.
VA-11 HALL-A: Prologue is said to provide a commentary on the state of the gaming industry, which would explain the cybernetic pitch. Somewhere in the game, you’ll be able to find a character inspired on media figure Jim Sterling, who will be aggrandized through the persona of Virgilio Armarndio, a narcissistic art critic.
So far, this introductory chapter will have two clients and about an hour and a half of gameplay. Grabbing VA-11 HALL-A: Prologue will cost at least $5, but that guarantees you’ll be given the full release once it’s out.
If you’re unsure and would try what is essentially a demo of a demo, the game jam prototype build of VA-11 HALL-A: Prologue can be found on the itch.io for free.
The full release of VA-11 HALL-A is expected in December.
