Mario Kart 8 is swarming with hidden secrets and unlockable items that can be used to gain an advantage over your opponent or for simple flaunting; Gold Karts, anyone?
And then there are secret Speed Boosts and Coin Boosts that can not only be used in Grand Prix, but also in Time Trial and Multiplayer Modes.
In this guide, I will discuss these boosts along with other tricks which will certainly put you on an advantageous position over your rivals. For more help on Mario Kart 8, read our Unlocks Guide.
Countdown Head Start
Personally, I have been using this trick since good old days of original Ridge Racer and it’s good to see it in Mario Kart 8.
Basically, you need to hit the acceleration button just as Number #2 (of the starting countdown) is about to go down. Doing so successfully will shoot you forward at an amazing speed.
However, this requires utter perfection and precise timing. Failed to do so, and you will spin out embarrassed.
Speed Boost by Collecting Coins
It is very crucial that you collect all the Gold Coins on a track. Why? Because getting these Gold Coins not only ensures that you unlock various Karts and Customizable Parts, but also get a little Speed Boost.
For each Gold Coin that you’ll collect, you’ll get a small speed bonus which is sometimes all you need in a heated battle. So make sure to collect each Gold Coin.

Speed Boost by Ramp and Environmental Objects
Many people don’t realize this, but you can actually gain a Speed Boost by using ramps on any track. Doing so is pretty simple!
All you need to do is to hit the Jump Button as soon as you’re about to leave the ramp. This won’t do wonders, but you’ll definitely see an improvement in your overall top speed.
Furthermore, this trick is not only confined to ramp and inclines, but also spreads out to track-specific objects. For example, shockwave from Bowser’s Fists in Bowser Castle can also be used to gain a small Speed Boost.
Just remember that a perfect timing is significant for this purpose!
Speed Boost by Drifting
Getting a Speed Boost by Drifting should not be new to Mario Kart players. Although carrying out a perfect drift can be difficult in many ways, but the rewards are promising.
Drifts are not only used to perfectly turn around a corner, but also gain a Speed Boost. The Speed Boost gained from a drift primarily depends upon the length of your drift. Longer the drift; higher the Speed Boost.
Racing video games veterans must be well-aware of this term! Drafting is the process of aligning your car behind your rival’s car to gain a short Speed Burst.
This feature has also been incorporated into Mario Kart 8. In order to gain a Speed Boost by drafting, simply get behind your rival’s car for 3 seconds and slip past him.
However, you need to make sure that do this for consecutive three seconds.
Zero Gravity Sections
Throughout the track, you’ll see Zero Gravity Sections. These glowing areas are capable of turning your vehicle into a futuristic wonder.
When in the Zero Gravity section, you’ll gain a small Speed Boost for hitting any kart on the track. However, you need to be aware of other drivers trying to do the same.
Stealing Items off Other Racers
While racing on the track, you’ll sometime see three Mushrooms revolving around your rival’s car. During this time, if you collide with your rivals’ car, you’ll gain their effects. However, you need to be careful as bombs will hit you pretty bad!
