Publisher Bandai Namco, who recently switched its name around, announced that Ace Combat Infinity is ready to launch in Europe on May 28, 2014. This is a Playstation 3 free-to-play game about the popular aerial combat franchise.
It issued a new trailer to get your blood pumping. It’s a pretty cinematic experience, with a story arc, chatter about military projects and so on.
Still, expect this to boil down to shooting a lot of things in the air. For instance, we get to meet the rival squadron, called Ridgebacks.
Aside from dogfights with many different planes, you’ll also be in charge of taking out defense lines, factories and so on. Some cooperative missions may also bring you against giant carrier aircrafts seen in the clip.
There’s a level progression system in Ace Combat Infinity that allows you to unlock new planes, parts and paint jobs. Naturally, locking away additional content is how its monetization works, but our time with it so far didn’t encounter any tough hindrances.
In turn, you receive a free game that looks and plays exactly like a main release from the franchise, so feel free to at least download it before passing judgment.
After a rather disappointing Assault Horizon iteration, it went sort of quiet on Ace Combat for a bit. This is a way to revive it.
In fact, Bandai Namco has been reiterating a lot of its stable as free games. Previous brands to receive free-to-play versions include Ridge Racer, Tekken and Soulcalibur.
Someone certainly is serious about their new business model. If Ace Combat Infinity is indicative of more projects to come, we’re not complaining.
