According to a newly surfaced report, PC gaming market has overthrown the console gaming market in terms of generated revenues.
In an interview with PCR-Online, DFC Intelligence owner David Cole has said that PC games have dominated console games in terms of revenues, though the newly released consoles should show an increase in numbers.
On a global basis PC games have surpassed console games but the new console systems means consoles should show an increase.
He continued by saying that PCs target a larger audience and most of the console gamers also game on a PC. To him, consoles have just become a luxury item now, whereas, PCs are absolute necessity – a situation which was exactly opposite a couple of years back.
Cole further said that MOBA(s) like Defense of the Ancients 2 and League of Legends continue to grow rapidly than any other product and are backed up a bunch of MMOs, first-person shooters and other free-to-play titles.
The MOBA games League of Legends and DOTA 2 dominate everything else by an order of magnitude in terms of more usage than other products. In the first part of 2014 we saw some signs that may change with the introduction of new titles and some increased play of games outside the MOBA category. But MOBA is dominant. Beyond that it is a nice mix of MMO, strategy and first person shooter.
He regarded PC enthusiasts as a consistent community as they expected ‘number of played hours’ to go down in 2013 since there were no major releases but,
Hours were actually flat with 2012 which bodes very well for the market going forward as more triple-A titles are released.
