According to a recent report from Ars Technica, the most dominant games on the Steam platform belongs to Valve with no surprises at all.
At first place its Dota 2 with 25.93 Million estimated owners, second up is Team Fortress 2 with 20.30 Million owners and on third place its Half Life 2: Lost Coast with 12.77 Million owners. These estimates that are put in the report are from the information that is publicly available.
This domination of top three games doesn’t come as much of a surprise because Dota 2 and Team Fortress 2 are completely free-to-play titles with their fan base still increasing, even to this day and Half Life games usually come in a bundle with the other games.
As you can see in the analysis below, the top 20 games on Steam are quite dominated by first party titles from Valve.
The report from Ars Technica also comes to conclusion that more than 37% of the games by registered Steam accounts have never even been loaded a single time.
The reason for this issue is pretty obvious. Many games bought on Steam are either on sale or they are gifts or because they are free. Not many people tend to purchase the game because they really want to play it apart from Dota 2 and Team Fortress 2 of course.
What do you think of this report from Ars Technica? Do you think there is any title that can dethrone Dota 2 from the platform of Steam?
