Details have emerged on the cancelled Star Wars title, that centers around Darth Maul and his transformation into a Sith Lord.
According to Game Informer, the project began as discussions between Nintendo and LucasArts for a Spin-Off IP for the Wii, 3DS and the Wii U. In the end, they settled for the origin story of Darth Maul, the villain from Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace, with Red Fly handling the project.
The story evolved into “Darh Maul and Darth Talon facing off against Darth Krayt and his Sith Army.” Unfortunately, Darth Maul was poorly developed in the movie, which itself managed to disappoint thousands of loyal fans, so it was unclear if making him the protagonist of the game was a good idea.
Red Fly eventually turned the project into a multi-platform title because Nintendo didn’t meet the financial demands to make it a first-party project. The studio worked on the game despite Lucas Arts issuing a cancellation notification, soon the project went into hiatus and was finally canceled for good.
Disney holds the rights over the Star Wars Franchise whilst EA holds the rights for developing Star Wars games, so it is highly unlikely that a new Star Wars title will be released for Nintendos consoles, but if the sales of their consoles were to increase, Wii U in particular, Nintendo can use that to persuade both Disney and EA to release Star Wars title(s) on their Hardware.
