The critically acclaimed Sony Exclusive for the Playstation 3, The Last of Us is getting a live action film!
Screen Gems will be the distributor for the film adaptation of Naughty Dog’s game. The Creative Director for the game, Neil Druckmann is also going to be writing the script for the film.
On Naughty Dog’s behalf, the project will be produced by Co-Presidents’ Evan Wells and Christophe Balestra, as well as Creative Director Neil Druckmann and Game Director Bruce Straley, along with Sam Raimi collaborating under Ghost House Pictures banner.
The President of Screen Gems – Clint Culpepper stated that Screen Gems’ Brian Dukes and Eric Ling brought this game to his attention and insisted that the California based production company take on the project.
Upon interacting with the quality storytelling in the game, Clint Culpepper stated that he “knew the audience for this project was far greater than just the gaming community and that Neil Druckmann must write the screenplay.”
He also expressed that he was thrilled upon SCEA’s Riley Russell being able to get him in front of Neil and Evan Wells to plead his case. And his belief that Same and his team at Ghost House can round up the perfect team to help realize Neil’s vision.
“Our partnership with Sam Raimi, Ghost House Pictures, and Screen Gems to develop a film based on The Last of Us universe is a perfect fit,” said Evan Wells, Naughty Dog’s Co-President. He then talked about how – since the game’s release in June there have been many companies who’ve interacted with them to talk about a possible film production but that they’ve found perfect partners in Raimi, Ghost House and Screen Gems who share the creative vision and high standards that Naughty Dog encapsulates. “We look forward to collaborating with Sam, his team, and Screen Gems, to make a movie that will thrill fans of The Last of Us and general audiences worldwide.” he said.
Sam Raimi is an American director best known for his works on the Evil Dead series and directing the Spider Man Trilogy. He also directed the superhero film Darkman and worked on a number of successful television shows.
Screen Gems on the other hand is known for making action flicks like the Resident Evil film franchise or the Underworld series. It’s also a subsidiary of SEA. An odd mix, but it just might deliver the movie that the Last of Us is worthy of.
The story for The Last of Us follows the two survivors – Battle Hardened Joel and the young and capable Ellie as they struggle to survive in the despotic post apocalyptic wasteland that once used to be America – twenty years after a pandemic ravaged humanity. The story of the game explores themes of love, survival, love and redemption.
