Taiwanese website GNN covered a press event with Diablo 3 director Josh Mosqueira in Korea last week. Imminent Diablo expansion Reaper of Souls was the talk of the day, but the site also reportedly learned the basics of Heroes of the Storm’s free-to-play system.
The article states that Blizzard Entertainment is developing a League of Legends style payment model for their MOBA – featuring free heroes rotated each week, with purchases made for permanent access to individual heroes.
However, this is not the only way to run a successful MOBA. Valve make their money in Dota 2 via an in-game store, which sells equipment, tools, couriers, announcers and tournament items and allow players access to all of their heroes for free.
According to Blizzpro’s translation of the GNN story, Josh Mosquiera claimed that Heroes of the Storm was indeed going with the rotating champion model, and that players who pre-ordered Reaper of Souls would get the Demon Hunter champion unlocked for free.
What are your thoughts on this news? Would you rather go League of Legends route where you pay per hero, or would you rather see them go the DOTA 2 route where all the Heroes are free and you make micro-transactions for things like different skins? Let us know in the comments!
