Bungie’s upcoming shooter Destiny is going to be the “best-selling new video game IP in history,” said Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick during a post-earnings financial call yesterday.
Destiny is indeed looking like a very beautiful title that has been carefully planned at every step. However, claiming it to outsell the likes of Super Mario and Final Fantasy, that have each sold more than 100 million units to date, is pretty bold.
It’s not going to be easy for Destiny though, and it will have to go against a lot of major titles that are releasing this year. The Order: 1886 for one, a fabulous title that is being developed by Ready at Dawn, has been turning heads since its announcement back at E3 last year.
There’s Titanfall as well, which has been hyped above sea level, but since it has EA behind it, you can’t really place all your eggs in a single basket. There are others as well like Sunset Overdrive, the just revealed Evolve, etc.
Activision heads though believe Destiny to have enough substance to burst right through them all.
During the earnings call, Kotick also said that Destiny is being anticipated to become Activision Publishing’s third billion-dollar franchise, joining Call of Duty and Skylanders. The game releases for the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One consoles on September 9 with no PC version in sight.
