Earlier today it was reported that Epic Games has sold ownership of their beloved Gears of War franchise to Microsoft for an undisclosed price.
While this confirms Microsoft’s plans to keep on making more titles in the Gears of War series for the Xbox One, it also means that Epic would no longer be involved. Microsoft could always hire them for a new installment, but seeing that the studio overlooked all four titles for the series, it seems a bit bizarre to suddenly see them go.
Fans took the news hard. Since Epic also provides software licenses to other developers for its Unreal Engine, many assumed the studio to be leaving game development behind and focusing on that instead.
Wes Phillips, public relations manager of Epic, took to Twitter to assure everyone that that was not the case.
“And for the people saying Epic isn’t making games anymore, we currently have multiple games in development including Fortnite,” Phillips wrote on Twitter.
Fortnite is an upcoming cooperative survival shooter, where players work towards building defenses by day and fight off evil creatures by night. The game has been in development for a long time for the PC and a release date still hasn’t been revealed.
