League of Legends Being Affected by UK Anti-Porn Filters

From what players gather, the newly installed pornographic filters in UK are messing with League of Legends and ultimately interfering with the game’s updates.

The filters go into full effect this month and will prohibit users from accessing any kind of pornographic content on the web. Unfortunately, and also unsurprisingly, the system is far from perfect. Being programmed to block anything with the word “sex,” League of Legends players in UK are unable to update their game because a couple of its URLs inadvertently spell out the said word.

According to a member of a League of Legends tech support volunteer group, these may be the offending URLS:

  • VarusExpirationTimer.luaobj
  • XerathMageChainsExtended.luaobj.

As you can see, with the two words combined, the URL unintentionally spells out “sex,” and hence making the filter come into action. The block resulted in the update failing with “file not found” errors, which are usually created by missing files or broken updates on the part of the developers.

Riot Games has not responded to this but if the filters are indeed the cause of this issue, then perhaps a representative might have to meet up with David Cameron’s team to come up with a quick fix.
