PSN Messaging Bug Could Corrupt All Data On PS4

The new technology is on the rise and people are connecting to each other through internet. This statement is especially true for gaming.

Those days are gone when you had to invite people over to your house to have some multiplayer fun for the games like Super Mario Kart and the original Super Smash Bros.

After all, why would you want to go across town when you can just connect to Xbox Live or PSN, then you can play and chat as much as you want.

Unfortunately, for PlayStation 4 users these group chats come at a price. Reddit user ‘nyteryder79’ found that out the hard way when his console was corrupted and required a complete re-initialization of the system.

It started off as harmless as just not being able to do anything with the group message but quickly spread to affecting all their messages. After that, nyteryder79 said that:

After about an hour of gaming, my PS4 switched to a blue screen and started to rebuild the database, which took about an hour. When it was finished, it said my database was corrupt. So, I turned the PS4 off, booted into safe mode and attempted to rebuild the database. It said it finished, so I booted the console back up, but all my messages were still screwed.

Calling Sony’s support hotline helped him re-initializing PS4, which initially solved the problem but the issue popped up again after few days.

Calling Sony’s support second time got him the acknowledgement from support staff that it is a PSN-bug. If you happen to be affected by this bug, the troubleshooting steps are as follows:

  • Boot into safe mode by turning off your system, then holding down the power button for seven seconds. You should hear two beeps: one when you first push the power button and a second after seven seconds. Connect your controller with the USB cable and press the PS button. You should see a screen that looks like this if you did it correctly:

PS4 Errors

  • Once in safe mode, choose option 5: Rebuild Database. Note that this could take an hour or more.
  • Install the PlayStation app on a mobile device and attempt to delete your messages.
  • Clear the messages from your PS4 or PS3, if possible.

If you are experiencing the same issue, don’t forget to report it to help others like you.
