SegmentNext Awards: Best Fighting Game of 2013

Fighting games like Street Fighter, Tekken, and the King of Fighters have ruled the Japanese and Korean Arcades for over two decades.

These Arcades have slowly made their place in other parts of the worlds and players from around the globe have come out as the strongest in recent tournaments; even overthrowing Korean and Japanese veterans. However, until recently, fighting games on consoles have managed to fascinate as much audience.

Let’s have a look at the nominees:

  • Injustice: Gods Among Us
  • Killer Instinct
  • Dive Kick
  • Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R
  • Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3

The winner is Injustice: Gods among Us.

If you happen to be a comic and fighting games fanatic as myself, then Injustice: Gods among Us is a treat for you!

It has successfully taken up various heroes and villains from different comics and put them against each other; a dream come true. With Injustice, NetherRealm Studio has managed to achieve where other fighting game developers (with the exception of Tekken) has failed i.e. a strong storyline.

The story of Injustice revolves around the Joker getting hold of a nuclear bomb and detonating it Metropolis.

Caught in the blast radius is everyone Superman loves and cares about. Wrathful with the spirit of vengeance; Superman kills the Joker and set out on a journey of setting up a new world order under his command. Batman (the savior of the world) calls upon other superheroes from a different dimension to end the reign of Man of Steel.

The game features different stages with loads of interactive elements, around 50 superheroes and villains, exciting challenges. And it’s not only about singleplayer as the multiplayer is equally fun.

Injustice features a ton of fun multiplayer modes; you can either get neck and neck with another player or enter the King of the Hill where you spectate and wait for your turn in a queue. You can also play the survival mode in which your life and character carry forward.

All in all, Injustice: Gods among Us is a brilliant fighting game in years with a rooting story, artistic design, engaging gameplay. A must buy for fighting fanatics!

Runner-Up: Killer Instinct

Games like Tekken or Street Fighter take fairly a long time to get released. However, in 2013, we received a couple of good games that even made their place in fighting competitions like EVO.

Killer Instinct is a fighting game developed by Double Helix Games exclusively for Xbox One as its launch title. The game is currently F2P on Xbox Live Marketplace with only one character available to play. It doesn’t have a singleplayer story as of now but features a multiplayer mode.

The heart of Killer Instinct is the long combo and juggles; that are fairly easy to execute. The King of Fighters veterans will find lots similarities between the two games in terms of executing lengthy combos, crosses, counters, ultras, etc.

It is said that a singleplayer campaign; separate for each character will be released in March, 2014.
