By   /   Jan 14, 2014

Action-adventure is one genre that doesn’t get stale over time. Instead, it keeps on getting better with each day passing. 2013 witnessed some of the greatest action games ever created!

Games like Grand Theft Auto V and Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag have raised the bar even higher.

Let’s have a look at the nominees for the best action games of 2013:

  • The Last of Us
  • GTA 5
  • Assassin’s Creed 4
  • Tomb Raider
  • Dead Rising 3

The winner is Grand Theft Auto V.

When we talk about the action games of 2013, there shouldn’t be any surprises; Grand Theft Auto V is going to take it. And quite rightfully so!

GTA V revolves around not only one but three main protagonists this time.

Michael De Santa is a retired criminal who is trying to lead the rest of his life with his unfaithful wife and dysfunctional children. Franklin is a small-time gang member; craving to do something big.

Some bad decisions on the part of Michael get him back in business, and he comes across Franklin Clinton. Trevor Phillips; an associate of Michael from the past (who, until now, has presumed Michael as dead) comes to know about their actions and confronts them. And, thus, our story starts.

Each of our characters has their distinctive stories, relationships, and lifestyles. Rockstar Games has very smartly integrated all these characters and how their lives intermingle with each other’s.

All these characters have their special abilities.

For example, shooting, flying, and driving. Moreover, the attributes for different skill vary with each character. However, these individual skills can be ameliorated over the course of time.

Since, these characters have their own distinctive abilities, some missions require you to switch among all three of them, in particular, situations.

When not on a mission, switching amongst these characters is as easy as pressing a button on your D-pad. The game offers various activities to engage. These activities include strip clubs, playing with your pet dog; Chop, cycling, mini-games, and much more.

Heists are also an integral part of GTA V and add a lot of action to the game.

Prior to carrying out a heist, players are asked to gather a crew and all the necessary equipment. When everything is done, you will be provided with a couple of option for carrying out the heist; so as to complement your play style.

The city of Los Santos provides a memorable experience that you wouldn’t want to miss on. With hundreds hours of gameplay and a separate experience in the form of GTA Online, Grand Theft Auto V is certainly one of the best GTA games ever created.

Runner-Up: Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag

If it wasn’t for Grand Theft Auto V, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag would’ve been the best action game of this year. This open-world action-adventure game is developed by Ubisoft Montreal.

The game is set in the 18th century Caribbean in the age of piracy. The story revolves around a pirate named Edward Kenway who is the grandfather of Assassin’s Creed III protagonist Ratonhnhaké:ton.

The game features player’s own ship called Jackdaw. Players can access the ship at any point in the game along with buying upgrades for it. Edward can also hire members for his ship crew, which then help him in taking out other ships for cash and other resources.

Hunting has also returned in the franchise and is better than ever. Edward cannot only hunt animals on land but also harpoon on water. The game has received good reviews from critics for its open-world gameplay, visuals, and naval combat.
