Gran Turismo 6 Tuning and Car Upgrades Guide
Tuning in Gran Turismo 6 not only allows you to alter your car settings in a number of ways, but you will also be able to change your car’s PP (Power Points). However, you should note that some races impose a limit on a car’s PP, and you may need to alter that.
In addition to PP, some races also impose a limit on kinds of tyres that you can place on your car. In this guide, I’ll be covering various aspects of tuning mechanism that you can have to improve your car’s overall performance.
Gran Turismo 6 Tuning and Car Upgrades
In Gran Turismo 6, tyres are divided into 4 basic classes:
- Dirt & Snow
These four types of tyres are further classified into different kinds to offer your car a balance between road-grip and durability. You’ll find a complete list of tyres that you can find in the game:
These tyres are designed for a normal/smooth racing experience. As the name suggests, hard tyres are extremely durable but due to the hardness; you’ll not be able to have a decent road-grip. The grip that is offered is very close to normal life racing.
Unlike hard tyres, the normal tyres offer a good mix between hard and soft tyres. These tyres wear off after some time but have pretty decent road-grip.
Soft tyres are opposite of hard tyres as they provide insane road-grip but don’t have that much of a long durability. You can’t expect them to serve you for long but for a track with sharp twists and turns; these are ideal.
These tyres are only exclusive to Racing Class and have some block patterns on them. These tyres are designed in a way, which are perfect in wet conditions. The patterns on these tyres automatically remove water off them and continue to provide excellent grip.
Intermediate tyres are also exclusive to Racing Class and have a groovy pattern on them. These tyres are designed in a way, which would serve you well when you’re uncertain about weather conditions.
The patterns on these tyres let you have a perfect grip even when you come across wet and dry surfaces on a track.
These tyres are especially designed for tracks where the friction is extremely less. Having a deep groovy pattern on them; these tyres allow you to dig deep into the track and provide a perfect grip. In addition to this, they come in very handy when you are expecting a skidding surface.
Spiked Snow Tyres
When you’re planning on going to a snowy/icy track, these tyres will serve you the best. The tyres are designed in a way so as to increase the contact with the land and provide you a better grip.
The grip is also provided by a number of spikes on the tyres which provide the required force to stay on a snowy track.
The basic purpose of suspension is to maximize the friction between tyres and the road to provide a better grip and comfort level for the passengers. On an even road, there is not much role of suspension but on an uneven track, suspension comes in really handy.
Soft suspension features a low spring strength and damping force, which tends to provide a better road-grip on uneven race tracks; by uneven, I mean a bumpy track.
The soft racing suspension makes sure that your car’s tyres stay in contact with the road for longer durations of time; even if the road conditions don’t allow it.
Hard suspension is exactly opposite to that of soft suspension and features high spring strength and damping force. This kind of suspension should be used on tracks, which are flat and without any bumps.
Owning to the high spring strength, this suspension makes up for soft steering and a more real experience.
In case, you’re planning on having a go on the rally tracks, you should definitely consider having this suspension. This suspension lets you increase your car’s height by a few inches than the normal.
It also features a lengthy suspension stoke which makes steering soft and smooth. The tyres tend to follow the road and transfer maximum power to the road; even on a bumpy dirt race track.
If you don’t plan on having a default suspension class, then this one is for you! Adjustable suspension lets you customize your suspension according to your preference and racetrack.
You will not only be able to alter your car’s height, damping force, and spring strength but also wheel alignment and stabilizers.
Braking don’t need an introduction! Everyone in their lives has drove some sort of a vehicle to get familiar with the whole braking system.
Racing Brake Kit
These brake kits are pretty durable even after a long use, and you are guaranteed de-acceleration even at top speed of your car. The large-diameter disc and calipers that can undergo strong stress make them an ideal choice for continuous braking and accelerating.
The Brake Balance is an important phenomenon that should be considered prior to taking part in a race. This mechanism allows you to alter the sensitivity of front and rear brakes as per your will. Though the ideal situation is to match the sensitivity of front and rear brakes, you can play with it to see which settings work best for you.
Gran Turismo allows you to alter the value on a scale of 0 to 10. Increasing the front brakes sensitivity will exert more pressure on the front tires. Though this increases the car’s stability during corners and under-steering, putting too much pressure on the front tires affects the brakes.
As for putting more pressure on the rear tires within a low threshold will increase the braking performance but increasing it to large values will disturb your car’s performance. It can even lead to lost vehicle control and over-steering of your car at corners.
The five-speed transmission which is by default equipped in many cars. However, the six-speed transmission allow your car to have more of an overlap of gear ratios.
This makes up for a better driving experience in the cars which tend to have a lower power bands. The acceleration is surely improved with this one, but the overall top speed of your car will be affected. Furthermore, since the gears need to change more frequently, you need to keep the time wasted by this into consideration.
This transmission lets you change the gear ratio of all the gears as per your preference and racetrack. The gear ratios for each gear can either be individually adjusted, or you can set a top speed limiter and let the game make the necessary changes for you.
You should note that:
- A short gear will result in higher acceleration but a lower top speed.
- A long gear will result in lower acceleration but a higher top speed.
This clutch-plate is an amalgam of a lightweight flywheel and a two-plate clutch. The lightweight flywheel makes up for the decreased rotational force which in turn lets your car have a better engine response.
Using these clutch-plates, you will be able to decrease the gear ratios and improve the overall acceleration of your car.
This clutch-plate features an even more lightweight flywheel combined with a three-plate clutch so as to provide a more road-grip and control. And like I have afore mentioned, a short gear will reduce the top speed so bear that in mind.
Surely, the acceleration and responsiveness of the engine will increase, but you will have to sustain the loss of revs on the down side.
It’s difficult to describe what a gigantic piece of metal under your car’s hood does?! To put it simply, it’s the task of a car’s engine to convert fuel into energy required to drive your car.
Basically, this thing works by combustion of the fuel; this engine is called ICE. Another type of engine that is found is EFI. Engines are varied on different grounds such as two-stroke, four-stroke, rotatory engine, etc.
In Gran Turismo 6, there are three stages of engines that you could install on your car to make it perform better:
Stage 1: Having a thinner head gasket; this allows your car to improve its overall power while keeping the revs at low.
Stage 2: This engine features high-compression pistons, hard valve springs, and polished ports to attain higher power and revs than Stage 1 engine.
Stage 3: The valve over-lap is widened are they are made lightweight to give you a smooth racing experience. Other than this, cam profile is made higher which lets you maximize the power of your car.
If you wish to have more acceleration and top speed, then you should consider installing Sports Computer. This will let you customize ignition timing, valve timing, and fuel mixture as per your preference.
When it comes to racing cars, turbo holds significance importance. Turbo allows you to increase the horsepower of your car without increasing the weight of it.
Gran Turismo 6 offers three different types of turbo that can be installed on your car:
Low RPM: This allows you to increase the acceleration of your car by using a compact turbine. This kit also make the engine of your car to be more responsive.
Medium RPM: This lets you have 3000-5000 rev on your car and increase the overall performance and torque of your vehicle.
High RPM: This should only be applied when you are going for the tracks with straight roads as this will let you touch you peak power of your car and have insane acceleration.
Ride Height basically determines the distance between the bottom of your car and the road. Altering the ride height can shift weight. Thus, changing the way it turns while cornering and braking.
Increasing the ride height increases the center of gravity of the car which results in better control of your car. Lowering the front ride height causes all the weight to be shifted to the front. This eventually results in better car handling at corners, more responsive brakes, and more stability but be careful not to decrease it too much.
I wouldn’t recommend having the lower rear than front as it affects the brakes performance and responsiveness greatly; despite the fact that it increases the acceleration a bit.
Spring Rate control the weight shift of your car during braking and accelerating. Having softer springs will allow your car’s weight to be shifted to the front. While having harder springs will shift the weight to rear.
Softer Springs = Less under-steer
Harder Springs = Less over-steer
Altering the Spring Rate primarily depends upon the weight of the car itself and you’ll have to switch between different options to see what works best for you. For a general overview:
Light cars = Front (9) – Rear (12)
Medium cars = Front (12) – Rear (15)
Heavy cars = Front (15) – Rear (17)
The angel between the car’s tires and the ground is called Camber Angel. It can be better understood in a way that while driving on a straight road, you should opt for an angle which would keep the tires straight. As for the cornering, the tires should come inwards a bit i.e. Negative Cambering.
I would recommend you not to have any camber on the rear of your car while keeping the front camber higher. Doing this will provide much grip to the rear, and your car will have more stability.
Somewhat related to Camber Angle is the Toe Angle which is the angle of tires from an overhead view. Having more negative toe in at the rear side will prevent your car from over-steering and vice-versa.
Power Limiter is installed on the engine airflow intakes which determines the amount of air that flows into the Combustion Chamber. This eventually leads to altering the power of your car. The power limiter is determined from a scale of 50 to 100.
Sometimes, your car is too over-powered to enter an event and needs to have limited power, this is where the Power Limiter comes.
Just like the Power Limiter, some events require you to have less weight or more weight to enter it. This is where Ballast Weight comes in.
Ballast Weight can add up to 200 kilograms to your car and in this way, you can bring two cars of different attributes in the same race.
When you’ve put weight on your car, you’ll then have the option of distribute the weight of your car. The weight of your car can be adjusted on a scale of -50 to +50.
Having a negative value means that more weight is placed on the front. Whereas, having a positive value mean that more weight will be shifted to the rear.
Considering an ideal situation, you should distribute the equal amount of weight on both the sides. However, depending upon the behavior of your car, you can change the amount of weight.
Let us take the example of a situation in which your car is over-steering. In this situation, you may want to add more weight at the rear end of the car. Similarly, in case your car is under-steering, you should consider putting more weight to the front side of your car.
