The influx of new hardware and software from Valve Corporation has been making waves in the gaming industry for a while now.
They introduced their own operating system, their own controller, and are launching Steam Machines. Now they have announced that they want Virtual Reality to come in line with their Steam Machines too.
At this year’s CES that took place couple of days ago, Valve’s Greg Coomer said that they will be releasing a Virtual Reality SDK soon. He said that the Dev Kit is expected to be released at the Steam Dev Days event that comes in next week.
Greg Coomer was talking to BBC when he stated that Valve wanted the VR SDK to become a standard interface for the virtual reality hardware.
We do know that Oculus Rift is being developed in full flow and this will be a welcome step for the developers who are making games based on that. Of course we must not forget Valve’s own virtual reality headset project that has been talked about recently.
“There’s also technology in development at Valve based around head-tracking and headset manufacture and design. We are working with other companies right now but we have not made any specific announcements.”
As it seems, Valve Corporation is turning out to be a major intermediary between software and hardware for others along with becoming a key player in both. What do you make of their recent initiatives into the hardware market?
