The Walking Dead Season 2 Crashes, Save Files, Errors, Freezes and Fixes

The Walking Dead Season 2
Telltale’s The Walking Dead Season 1 got the crown of Game of the Year in 2012, and it was praised a lot by the critics and fans alike. Considering its success and story-line, Season 2 was inevitable and Telltale didn’t take long to announce it.

Now, after a lot of anticipation, Season 2 has been released to masses on different platforms, including PC. If you are a PC user, chances are that you may come across some issues that might hamper your experience with the game.

If you come across any of these issues, you can use our list of workarounds to fix them!

#1 The Walking Dead Season 2 – Controller Issue
The game does support controllers. So, if your controller is not being recognized, make sure that you plug in the controller before you start the game. Furthermore, if you are unable to customize controls using a controller, you should use the controller buttons to get past the initial screens rather than a keyboard.

There have been some reports about wired controllers causing the crashes. I think that it’s a bug that needs to be attended by telltale. In the meanwhile you can enjoy the game using keyboard/mouse maybe?

#2 The Walking Dead Season 2 Crashes on Launch
There is a possibility that you may experience black screen and a crash after that when you try to launch The Walking Dead Season 2. To fix it, you can do the following:

  • Try verifying the integrity of your game files through Steam.
  • Try running the game manually ‘as admin’
  • If you are using a wired controller or any USB peripheral other than keyboard and mouse, try unplugging them.
  • If you are using third party tools like Fraps, try disabling them.

#3 The Walking Dead Season 2 Crash – The Game has stopped working
If your receive this error on launching the game, you try the workarounds mentioned in #3. Also, make sure that your drivers are up to date.

#4 The Walking Dead Season 2 – Textures Problem Fix
Weird textures usually arise due to the performance of your GPU. Since it’s not a common reported problem so the issue is most probably at your end. You should first make sure that you are meeting the minimum system requirements for the game.

It’s very important that your GPU drivers should be up to date. Furthermore, if you are using any visual tools in the background, try disabling them.

#5 The Walking Dead Season 1 Save Could not be Recognized
If your save file is not being recognized, there are a few things you can try to fix it:

  • Make sure that your save files are synchronized with Steam’s cloud save and that your cloud save is not disabled.
  • If that doesn’t work, launch the latest save file in Season 1 and roll back to the previous checkpoint and complete the game. After the credits are complete, exit out of the game and try copying the save file again.

#6 The Walking Dead Season 2 – Black Screen Fix
If you are experiencing a black screen and can still hear music in the background, it’s a resolution conflict that needs to be fixed.

When the game launches and the black screen appears, press Alt+Enter to get the game into the windowed mode. It will now give you the display. Now, you can set the same resolution as of your desktop from the game options and switch back to full screen.

If that doesn’t work, you can try adding the custom resoltuion the “Launch Options” via Steam.

#7 The Walking Dead Season 2 – Windows 8 Crash Fix
It’s not really a fix that many of you might like but for the time being, if you want to run the game, you will have to unplug your wired controller or any other USB peripheral that is not keyboard and mouse.

Alternatively, you can try placing the dinput8.dll file from windows 7 into your game’s directory to make it work.

#8 The Walking Dead Season 2 – Crash Fix During the Cinematic
Some users have reported that you can fix this initial crash by changing the settings to high. Now, I know that many of you might not be able to sustain good frame rates at high settings due to limited resources, but that’s just a workaround until the issue is sorted out officially.
