Valve announced today that on Friday i.e. December 13, they will start shipping Steam Machines to the 300 selective beta testers that were chosen recently.
The same post also gave word that those of you who know your way around Linux could make use of the SteamOS on the same day too.
It doesn’t matter if you weren’t lucky enough to get your hands on one of the prototypes, if you are good with the backdoors of Linux, the SteamOS release on Friday for you.
The official announcement regarding the shipping of the 300 Steam Machines that are to be given to beta testers states that the SteamOS will be made available when the prototype hardware ships but insists that you wait for the official Steam Machines release if you are just another user:
“But unless you’re an intrepid Linux hacker already, we’re going to recommend that you wait until later in 2014 to try it out. We’ll post info soon about that. Oh, and stay tuned for the in-home streaming beta to begin soon, too!”
Also, the beta is restricted to US only, owing to “regulatory hurdles” and contrary to what Valve promised initially.
Since the SteamOS releases this Friday, are you planning to download and try it out?
