Thief Gameplay Video Showcases New Mechanics

I can’t really say that those expecting a big Thief reveal during the recent VGX awards were left satisfied. Most of the announcements were story-related and while we saw a bit of gameplay footage, we would rather see more showcasing of Garret’s mastery of stealth and the shadows.

A new gameplay video released today shows off a few of Thief’s mechanics. The video is narrated in German, but you’ll get the idea.

Let me start by saying that the game looks absolutely beautiful. Garret’s animations, both casual and while in combat, are impressive. The City looks similar to the concept art, with a nightly fog to stir things a bit.

In the video, Garret enables a focus mode to find out points of interest in the environment. Fire and water arrows can be used to open up new paths. After utilizing both aspects, the player is shown entering the manor and fiddling with a painting to open up a hidden safe.

Following that comes a combat scene where I must point out that the game’s leaning system looks very good. Firing an arrow to kill the first guard, Garret then rushes to put out the torch held by the second guard and then in the darkness, finish him off in style.

Much like Assassin’s Creed, players will be able to freely run through the City, bouncing off the roofs and climbing what not. I like the fact that while infiltrating various houses, you can always come across collectible paintings and the like.

Thief is scheduled for release on February 25, 2014 for the PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
