Would it surprise anyone if EverQuest Next landed on the PlayStation 4? Certainly not. It’s not the first MMORPG to receive that treatment; with DC Universe Online launching alongside the PlayStation 4 this week and PlanetSide 2 confirmed for a release in early 2014 on Sony’s next-gen platform.
Speaking with GamerHub TV, Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley teased that the game may probably be in development for the said platform.
“We haven’t announced, technically, that we’re putting it on PlayStation 4, but it’s fair to say that we’re a Sony company so, you know, I say that with a smile on my face,” he said. “can’t wait to see it on the PS4.”
Smedley also noted that there are two features that differentiate the PS4 from its predecessors. First, the power inherent in the PS4’s 8 GB of RAM on a “stable platform that we can depend on” allows the studio to act like it’s “developing on a really super high-end PC, but it’s even better than that.”
Second, the PS4’s its integration with the PlayStation Network also allows SOE to “have a lot of features that we don’t ordinarily see in MMOs,” like using the console’s friends list to bring players into the game.
EverQuest Next was revealed in August of this year during Gamescom 2013 and so far has been announced for the PC alone. Beta signups are currently open.
