SWTOR: Galactic Starfighter Expansion Focuses on Space Dogfighting

Galactic Starfighter is the newly announced free-to-play expansion pack for BioWare’s massively-multiplayer online game, Star Wars: The Old Republic.

As should be evident from the name alone, the new expansion focuses heavily on deep-space dog fighting. Players will finally be able to take their galactic starfighter out on a cruise and end up dueling it out in space against other human players.

Subscribers of the game will get early access to the game on December 3, as well as to content like the exclusive Scout and Strike Fighter “Valiant” Paint Jobs, Pilots Suits and in-game titles. Those who have made a purchase in the game’s online store will be next in line for access on January 14, 2014; while everyone else will get their hands on the expansion on February 4, 2014.

The Old Republic is a role-playing game, so we wanted [the expansion] to feel like it was a feature in the RPG,” said lead designer Michael BackusBackus. “There were a lot of things we could have done to embrace a more flight sim feel, but we wanted it to have an RPG progression.

While players will not have the freedom to customize their ships, they will still be able to choose different models and upgrade them accordingly. Each ship will feature a skill tree that players can go through according to their preferred gameplay.
