Taking stage during BlizzCon 2013, director Duncan Jones revealed new story details for the upcoming Warcraft movie that is currently in production and will hit theaters in 2015.
According to Jones, the movie will not entirely paint one side as good and the other as evil. Instead, it will tell an “origin story” of the age-old conflict from the perspectives of both humans and orcs. Andiun Lothar, the leader of Alliance in Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness, will be the hero for the humans, while Durotan, father of Thrall, will be the hero for the orcs. Both sides have done their share of good and bad and the movie will show all of that. Jones called the tone as “red and blue” instead of good and evil.
When asked for casting details, Jones kept quite. The movie’s visual effects director, Bill Westenhofer, though said that the team plans to use a mix of live-action and CG effects to create a “gritty, muddy, down in the dirt, covered in grime” feel that he compared to Gladiator. “The swords that are being built are the biggest swords that a human can wield,” Westenhofer said.
The panel once again confirmed that the film will hit theaters on December 18, 2015 but knowing that Star Wars: Episode VII is scheduled for the same date; Blizzard might shift their movie to perhaps early 2016.
