Stoic Studio’s The Banner Saga finally has a release date and there was much rejoicing. The adventure releases for PC on January 14, 2014.
One of the gorgeous features of The Banner Saga is its hand-drawn backgrounds and character animations. Fierce Viking warriors go to battle against towering giants with horns, in icy landscapes.
Its style is reminiscent of Disney movies like The Sword in the Stone or Don Bluth animations, like those in Dragon’s Lair.
Players embark on a large caravan and set out to a journey with an inevitable end. Making choices in the game will impact the continuation, which also includes permadeath for any slain character. The only goal is survival.
There is a sizable combat element, where fights take place on a grid in a turn-based scheme. Along with the release date, The Banner Saga got a new trailer that depicts some of this strategic design in action.
Along with being approved for Steam, the game also flourished in a highly successful Kickstarter campaign. It grossed a little over 700% of its original goal of $100,000.
Part of its success comes from the names behind Stoic Studio. It’s comprised of just three individuals, who used to work for developer Bioware. Alex Thomas, Arnie Jorgensen and John Watson make up the team.
They decided to go indie after working on the company’s Star War: The Old Republic multiplayer game, which didn’t meet its huge expectations.
Stoic Studio will work together with a new indie publisher called Versus Evil for the release of their game.
In anticipation, they previously released The Banner Saga: Factions as a free-to-play multiplayer game on Steam. Playing the singleplayer of The Banner Saga will also unlock new characters in the free version.
