Battlefield 4 is currently in its open beta, featuring two gametypes – Conquest and Domination in the Siege of Shanghai map. DICE though is rolling out a new Obliteration game mode for the beta which is designed for 24 players on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, while on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC it will support up to 32 players. Of course the next-gen consoles have yet to release so consider the 32 player support to happen for PC only.
In Obliteration a bomb is spawned randomly on the map, after which both teams will fight over picking it up, dropping it off at one of their opponent’s three objectives, arming it and then finally destroying the objective. The same process is followed until all objectives on the map of a team are destroyed.
Note that once a player picks up the bomb, the other team is able to verify his location and will come charging in. Also Commander mode for the game type is optional.
Alongside the announcement, made on Twitter, the page also mentioned that server availability will be increased gradually. Thus allowing players to easily find populated servers, rather than waiting it out for an empty slot. Battlefield games are best played with a high number of combatants. Joining a server with 10 or 15 players is of no use when it comes to the game’s large maps.
Battlefield 4 is on schedule for release on October 29, 2013 for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. The next-gen versions will arrive in November for both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
The beta will conclude on October 15, giving DICE just another two weeks to implement the final touches on the game based on the beta feedback.
