Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is based on the golden age of piracy and with that a partial part of the game will have you scouring the high seas in your vessel to pillage, loot and kill other would-be pirates.
Of course none of that would be possible without your trusty pirate ship, which in the game acts as an ‘extension’ of your character. That essentially means that both you and the ship will get more powerful with upgrades and unlockables as the game progresses.
Speaking with VG247 during Gamescom 2013, Ubisoft content manager Carsten Myhill explained why one would necessarily want to upgrade his ship.
At the start of the game the entire map is at your disposal. The few run-ins you might have on the high seas will be simple or at best a bit challenging. Players might feel comfortable with just their default ship at hand.
However, there are many ports which are closely guarded by large ships that are heavily armed. These can sink your vessel in a manner of seconds. The only way to approach them is to play through the game, unlock the upgrades and make your ship more powerful.
And why would we want to take over such ports you ask? Myhill teased that the ports would be guarding something extra special and sinking a heavily armed fleet just to gain access will be worth it.
He wouldn’t say what exactly it would be and I guess we’ll just have to see that for ourselves when Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag launches for the PS3, Xbox 360, PC and Wii U on October 29 in North America and November 1 across Europe.
Assassin’s Creed IV will also be available as a launch title for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
