Upheaval Arts have just launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund StarCraft Universe, an MMO set in the fantastical science fiction world of StarCraft. They’re looking to raise $80,000 before September 10 so that they can breathe life into their idea and add another MMO to the market. They are just shy of $7,000 at time of writing, so there’s still a long road to go.
Interestingly enough, StarCraft Universe started out its life as a mod for StarCraft II and was officially sanctioned by Blizzard. The mod turned the popular real time strategy title into a mass multiplayer online game, and now with just a bit of funding, that mod could go on to become a full game in its own right.
Universe is set in a dark, alternate reality following the events of Wings of Liberty in which there was a “grim conclusion” for Kerrigan.
“Without the Queen of Blades to stop the hybrid’s assault, the protoss are overwhelmed and defeated. In this reality, what would the survivors of these shattered worlds do? StarCraft Universe tells this story,”
Universe will play as a traditional third-person MMO that spans an epic tale and brings multiplayer elements together for raiding experiences and co-operative gameplay, as well as the function to play by yourself and only interact with other players on a social level.
There are two races with four classes apiece currently: Terrans can play as Marine, Ghost, Medic, or Firebat. Protoss classes include Zealot, Dark Templar, Preserver, and High Templar.
Despite not being a part of Blizzard, Upheaval Arts aren’t stepping on any toes or throwing money at any lawyers, as they have Blizzard’s blessing to work on this project set within the StarCraft lore.
“While Blizzard is not directly affiliated with this project’s production, we do communicate with them to submit bug reports and make technical requests. “They have given their blessing/permission for us to launch this Kickstarter, and they are supporting our efforts by featuring SCU as an Arcade Highlight.”
