Toy Story in Space Confirmed for Disney Infinity

Disney have just confirmed the Toy Story in Space playset, which is compatible with the upcoming Disney Infinity toy/game platform.

Disney told fans at the D23 expo that the set would include Toy Story characters Buzz, Jessie and Woody. For those of you who are not aware, Disney Infinity is the company’s big bet on the melding of its toy business with video games.

Kids can buy a Disney Infinity starter pack with a base platform that can transport toys that are placed on it into a video game. A new play set is basically a whole new videogame.

This is essentially Disney’s response to Activision’s Skylanders toy series. The Skylanders toy/game platform has netted Activision over one billion in revenue, and Disney, who has typically been the dominating force when it comes to toys has realised the power that this combination might have.

The Toy Story in Space Play Set will be the sixth play set for the platform, and it will be released in October. Disney Infinity itself will be coming out a bit earlier, on the 18th of August.

Disney has also announced that Sorcerer’s Apprentice Mickey, Rapunzel from Tangled, and characters from Wreck-It Ralph, Frozen, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Phineas and Ferb will be available for play in Disney Infinity’s toy box mode. These will come out after October though.

The gameplay for the new set is said to involve jetpacks, lasers and all sorts of other futuristic, sci-fi gadgetry. Other play sets are based on Monsters University, the Incredibles, Cars, Pirates of the Caribbean and The Lone Ranger.

How do you feel about Disney Infinity? It’s apparently worked for Activision, I shudder to think what Disney might be able to accomplish with the kinds of intellectual properties they have to work with.
