Rage “Franchise is Not Dead”, says Willits

Rage, promoted as one of the most beautiful shooters out there at that time, has been confirmed by id Software to be not dead.

Speaking during this week’s QuakeCon 2013 event, the studio’s co-founder Willits said that “the franchise is not dead”.

“I’m proud of what we did, I’m proud of the universe that we built. We’re not doing anything immediately with it, but when I designed the universe, I designed it in such a way that it would be easy to step back into. I’m still proud that we did something that was different – it wasn’t like the games that we’ve done in the past.”

Rage was all the ‘rage’ back then, being the first game powered by their id Tech 5 engine. It went on to improve immensely and is now being adapted for use on next-gen projects, as well as in other Bethesda products.

“We really tried to do one engine that worked for everything,” Willits continued. “It really helps establish a robust tech that, as John [Carmack] said last night, we’re adding stuff into it based on the new consoles, and it’s allowed people to make different games because the technology is flexible and robust and works on everything.”

Rage was struck down heavily on release when players came across various game breaking bugs, crashes caused by non-supportive video cards, and most of all, issues with the game’s textures. For a title that was being marketed as visually stunning, that really left a gaping hole in the title.

The developers were quick to sort out all the issues though. However I believe that the game would have done a lot better had its release been more smoother.

In the end though, Rage paved the way for id to their future projects and it’ll be really interesting to see how a sequel pans out.
