The International is Valve’s annual Dota 2 tournament that turned heads with its $1 million prize money two years ago. Last year the event boasted an impressive $2 million pot which was said to be one of the, if not, the largest prize pool in competitive gaming history.
This year though Valve intends to take it to a whole new level with a prize pool hitting $2.6 million. Earlier this year the developer announced that every Dota 2 player who purchases the in-game Interactive Compendium, priced at $10, would be contributing $2.50 to the total prize pot. That helped it to eventually reach $2.6 million.
As an incentive, if the prize pool reached $3.2 million, Compendium owners will be able to select which Dota 2 hero releases next. Also a new immortal item would be unlocked but Valve has yet to reveal what it will do.
Dota 2’s rival League of Legends featured a prize pool of $2 million for its Season 2 World Championship last year. Riot Games have yet to announce their pot for Season 3 but we can well assume that it’s going to be something along the lines of The International.
