Is this the beginning of the end for Id Software?
Todd Hollenshead, president of Id Software has announced his retirement from the company after serving 17 long years. Prior to ZeniMax Softworks’ acquisition of the company back in 2009, Hollenshead served as CEO of the studio which are well known for their work on the DOOM and Quake franchises. After coming under the umbrella of Bethesda’s parent company, Hollenshead was then appointed the president of the studio.
“After many years with the studio, Todd Hollenshead decided to leave id Software to pursue other personal interests,” Bethesda’s Vice President of PR and marketing Pete Hines said in a statement. “While Todd was not part of the development teams, he was an integral part of id Software’s success as the business head of the studio and we wish him the very best in his future endeavors.”
Id Software released Rage after joining ZeniMax; which proved to be a highly controversial title. It was hyped as one of the best looking shooters of all time but was plagued with bugs and glitches right at its launch. It took the studio plenty of time to introduce patches and updates to fix the game; including one patch for better textures. However, by the time the game stablized the industry had moved on, leaving behind a dark mark on Id’s face.
The studio is said to be working on DOOM 4 now but according to Carmack, will be released when the time is right.
