At long last, Square Enix have finally confirmed that they’ve started development on Kingdom Hearts 3, which they confirmed to be planned long ago, but never started work on. Kingdom Hearts 3 will mark the tenth instalment in the Square Enix/Disney crossover franchise. This entry in the series will mark the end of the first planned trilogy of games.
The news comes straight from Sony’s press conference at E3 2013, when Tetsuya Nomura appeared on camera to show us a glimpse into Kingdom Hearts 3.
Kingdom Hearts was originally released back in 2002, with the sequel to that coming out in 2005, meaning that the wait between the main numbered games has been agonisingly long. Square Enix have been good to us though and have treated us with some wonderful side-games such as Birth By Sleep, Dream Drop Distance and Chain of Memories. Plus they’re bringing out Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMiX, which is sure to make fans of the series explode with joy. Especially when you consider that there’s going to be a 2.5 ReMiX at some point.
With Kingdom Hearts 3 confirmed to be the end of the Xehanort trilogy, this should clear up a large number of the plot holes and twists that have contributed to the rich and ever-unfolding Kingdom Hearts lore.
