It seems that Naughty Dog has so many stories to tell, but not enough games to tell them in. In a startling feature piece on the PlayStation Blog earlier today, we learned that whilst the story of Joel and Ellie in The Last of Us will be a complete tale, there’s more fables to tell in the forlorn post-apocalyptic environment.
So what does this mean? We know that there are story-based DLC packs coming out, but will those complete the story of Joel and Ellie, or will it focus on the other characters that you’ll meet throughout the game.
“I think the world [of The Last of Us] is ripe for more stories, but as far as the journey Joel and Ellie goes on it ends with this game. We were very conscious that we didn’t want to leave this story dangling. If we never do a sequel we’re ok with it, because we told the story we needed to tell.”
So this is definitely the end of their story, but what tales are there still to tell? The way they say that it “ends with this game” suggests to me that Naughty Dog already have plans in the works to bring out a sequel to The Last of Us, and who could blame them? It’s received a lot (and I mean ALOT) of good press and the game still isn’t out.
The post-apocalyptic wasteland that we’ll soon be exploring is supposedly very rich in content and story, so it makes sense that there could be a sequel focusing on other characters. Perhaps a prequel explaining how the world came to be as it is in which you play through the events that ended the world. There’s other characters to explore as well, so what about a game telling us their story and how they got where they did? It’s a rich world and there’s a lot we won’t know about it.
