Sony Cancels Used Game DRM for PS4

By   /   May 27, 2013

It’s been almost a week since Microsoft announced their new Xbox One console in a most bizarre reveal event. However the firm continues to dodge questions regarding their policy on used-games.

They have officially confirmed and yet denied at different places the fee consumers would have to pay in order to activate a used game.

Microsoft may have not given the answer fans were looking for, so now all eyes are turned towards the PlayStation 4. Will Sony deliver or else announce something similar regarding their policy on used games and send the consumers downhill in a spiral.

Sony has already confirmed that used games can be played on the PlayStation 4 but they have failed to confirm if there is any additional fees involved.

Now according to various sources on NeoGAF Sony actually did have a DRM policy for used games but were pondering over whether it should be applied or not. Note that there’s no official confirmation that these sources are indeed who they say they but chances are they indeed belong to the industry.

Here is what one of them posted:

The jist of it is that Sony is listening to the backlash that Microsoft (MS) is getting and they are basing decisions off of this,” … “I would assume MS is also, but I don’t know that for sure. But I can say, for sure, that the past week’s PR nightmare for MS has not been lost on Sony and they, in fact, do have a used game ‘solution’ working and have been going back and forth for months on whether to use it. This past week is pushing them strongly into ‘Yeah, let’s not use that.’ ”

That he followed up with:

I just heard on Friday that [the used games DRM] wasn’t [coming]. I didn’t want to come right out and post about it because leak-y individuals like myself are getting a bit too much attention. and I don’t care about myself, but I’m not really looking to get my friends into trouble. But I’ve confirmed it with a second person so I got dumb and posted it.

The guy makes it clear that Sony officials are listening in on consumer’s reactions and that they should convey their view by using the hash-tags #PS4NoDRM and #PS4USEDGames.
