In a rather eyebrow-raising move, Microsoft has acquired the rights to create achievements for the simple act of watching TV. It seems that with the Xbox One being so focused on being an all-round family entertainment center instead of just a gaming console, Microsoft feels that they can spice up the normally passive act of sitting in front of the telly.
The news comes via Gamesindustry, who noticed that Microsoft filed for the patent way back in November, making this a half-a-year long scheme that has finally come together. They’ve also dropped some hints on how the achievements would be unlocked. Apparently, you can get achievements for as little as watching the half-time show during the Super Bowl, and on the other end of the spectrum some of the hardest ones are unlocked by watching entire series.
It’s easy to point out the flaw in this as people can easily just leave their TV running and go do other stuff, but people are forgetting one important thing. The Kinect is always watching. Always.
Creepiness factor aside, the Kinect will be tracking your movements to make sure you don’t cheat here and actually watch the show. Further achievements that are related to the Kinect are also related to other products. For example, if you have a Starbucks coffee next to you, you can hold it up to the camera and the Kinect will scan it and unlock a specific achievement for that.
What do you think about the new XBONE TV achievements? Are they worth it? Are they too easy? Does knowing the Kinect is watching your every move creep you out?
