Previously leaked through a Steam database entry, Valve has now officially announced Steam Trading Cards, a rewards program for all players on Steam.
The service is currently live in beta in the following games: Dota 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Team Fortress 2, Portal 2 and Half-Life 2. Valve has promised to introduce “many more” titles in the coming months.
So what exactly is Steam Trading Cards? They are virtual cards which can be earned by playing the above mentioned games. Up to half of the card set is dropped through game play, while the other half can be achieved through trade. Once a set is complete, you can turn them into badges that will show up on your Steam profile. When crafting a badge, players will receive random rewards, including downloadable content, game coupons, emoticons and profile backgrounds.
“Many games have achievements that are grindy or un-fun to get, and we want the act of getting game cards to be fun for all users in games,” Valve said. “We also don’t want to push users to cheat or use achievement-unlocks in games in order to get cards, since that devalues achievements and isn’t that fun either.”
