Bungie will be utilizing SpeedTree in its upcoming MMO Destiny. For those of you who are not familiar with it, SpeedTree delivers amazingly natural real-time trees and plants with seamless LOD transitions, an array of lighting, physics and wind effects, as well as an SDK that can be programmed to support any level of engine integration.
SpeedTree President Michael Sechrest had the following to say in regard to Bungie using their product in Destiny:
We’re very pleased that Bungie chose to feature SpeedTree in Destiny’s unique vision of overgrown futuristic worlds.
Bungie had very specific needs and challenges for Destiny, including scalability from current to next-generation hardware. SpeedTree was designed with these sorts of requirements in mind.
Destiny will cast players as the guardians of the last city on earth, as they travel through ruins across the solar system reclaiming all that was lost during the fall of mankind from its golden age. Yep, the plot setting of the game is pretty grand.
As for Bungie, all gamers will recognize them as the creator and developers of the critically and commercially acclaimed Halo 1, 2 & 3. They have a tremendous reputation, question is can they live up to it?
Guess we will find out soon enough when the game releases on the PS3, Xbox 360 and PS4. Most likely it will also releases on the next-gen Xbox. However, that hasn’t been announced yet.
