March’s 2013 NPD sales report is in, placing the Xbox 360 at the top of the console food chain. No surprise there, as it’s been there for 20 straight months now. The top spot in the retail list goes to none other than Bioshock Infinite, a game that’s been driving critics crazy, for better or worse.
The Xbox 360 sold a total of 261,000 units in March. Retail expenditures totaled $402 million, including revenues from everything from hardware to software to accessories.
All in all, retail sales saw a 30 percent drop in March, down to 371,000. And while the Xbox 360 continues to thrive, hardware sales are actually down 32 percent. Though it’s mostly handheld systems that are seeing a decline, the Nintendo 3DS saw a 9 percent increase over the same period in 2012, and a 50 percent increase in its software sales.
Thank Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate for that.
Software sales are up for the first time since November 2011. The increase of 2 percent can be attributed to the top games of March being mostly new releases. Take Two is experiencing its best month ever with the propelled sales of NBA 2K13 and Bioshock Infinite.
Infinite, a bit of an anomaly with the critics, is praised as a video game, but has seen a backlash against its story and extreme violence. Tomb Raider is also performing admirably, more so than any other entry in the franchise. Then there’s Gears of War: Judgement and God of War: Ascension rounding out the top new games of March.
The top ten best selling games are as follows:
- Bioshock Infinite (360, PS3, PC)
- Tomb Raider (360, PS3)
- Gears of War: Judgment (360)
- God of War: Ascension (PS3)
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 (360, PS3, PC, NWU)
- Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon (3DS)
- MLB 13: The Show (PS3, PSV)
- NBA 2k13 (360, PS3, WII, NWU, PSP, PC)
- The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct (360, PS3, NWU)
- Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 (360, PS3)
